Here's some more of your letters mates!

Dear Steve,

I've just finished reading the scans of the running man on your site and I've got to say what a cracking little story it is. I love the way it delves into the dark side of the American dream, especially the couple of episodes set in the town of Deliverance. Oh yeah, if anyone who reads this wants to see some more cool yarns about man verses nature ala Hook Jaw, then I recommend they try to pick up some early 2000ads and read Flesh books 1 and 2 and best of all, Shako (the killer polar bear). Matt

P.S. hope I'm not turning into a sad bastard 'cos I seem to be the only person posting messages.

Steve says: I'm the saddest bastard, 'cos I put the bloody site up in the first place. Glad you enjoyed The Running Ma, it wasn't first on my reading list when I was originally buying Action, but then I read a few episodes in a row and was hooked, it turned into one of my favourites. David Bishop's 'Thrill Power Overload' which featured in the Dredd Megazine a few years ago has some good stuff about Flesh. I'd just started reading the Meg again and picked this up. Some good items on how Action hindered 2000AD's progress through censorship. Zarjaz...or something.

Dear Steve,

Reading the article on Wagner's Walk got me thinking about what other comics ripped off basic Action story-lines. For example M.A.C.H. 1 in 2000AD could be Dredger but a computer-assisted version. I also seem to remember a story from the mid-80s in Eagle called Survival drawn by a Spanish guy (Ortiz?) in which a virus has killed off most of the adult population and left only a few crazed survivors. Could almost be a bootleg of Kids Rule O.K. but not quite as violent. Anyway if any-one can think of anymore 'spin-offs' then I'd be interested in seeing their suggestions posted here.

Matt

Dear Steve,

I think that Judge Dredd was an obvious copy of Dredger, but seeing as how both characters were based on Dirty Harry that's not surprising. One bootleg might be Shako from 2000AD being a Hook Jaw copy. Both featured big animals on the rampage, their natural environment being invaded by humans, a primary human villain and a sympathetic character who meets his demise at the hands (claws? jaws?) of the title character. Lou

Steve says: Apparently Bullet did a story about a fugitive called On The Run. A Running Man rip off? Probably.
