Here's some more of your letters mates! | Dear Steve, Hello there. Love the site - it brought back many happy memories as I used to get the comic (from issue 1) when it first came out . I am wondering if you can give me any info please. I have searched on-line for many years for people who offer CD-Rs of scans from Brit comics such as Action, Battle and 2000ad as I would love to get hold of some of these to show to my own 2 young sons - I have seen quite a few people that offer American Marvel/Dc comics, but never any UK comics and wondered if you either had any advice or if you knew of anyone who would offer this? Many thanks, Richard Holl | | Steve says: Thanks for the mail, glad you like the site. As for CD-R stuff of old comics, I'm morally bound to tell you that such things are, of course, illegal. That said, they do exist, and are available to those in the know without the problems of eBay, which really does specialise in the American market rather than Britcoms. One avenue to pursue is bittorrent, but this has its limitations as downloads take time and disk space, if you can find what you are after or even know where to look. The same applies for dc++ and other file sharing software. I've been scanning Action for some time, and have about 10 pre-ban issues to go, but since Egmont have already issued legal proceedings against the Misty website for selling scans, I'm not going down that avenue. | | Dear Steve, Thanks for your great site, the Sevenpenny Nightmare. As a yank who never knew Action, but who has had a long interest in comic censorship over the years, here and elsewhere, I was fascinated (and saddened) by the story of Action, but also really enjoyed the strips you've provided to all of us. I note that the site has not been updated recently. Is there any chance we'll see the complete "Hell's Highway" series? I was intrigued by the story outline and the one strip that I saw. Thanks again so much for your hard work. This has obviously been a labour of love. Jon Kapecki | | Steve says: Thanks for your mail Jon, glad you enjoyed the site. Unfortunately Action wasn't the only Britcom to feel the censor, but it was hit far more than any other. there are a couple of books about it, as you may have realised. Martin Barker, the university professor who wrote the sad tale of the Sevenpenny Nightmare also wrote 'A Haunt of Fears' a great book which tracks the demise of the British horror comics scene post-EC. Again, the censor was to blame. Action had a lasting effect on how Britcoms were produced for over a decade, and I have some further excerpts from the unpublished origins of 2000AD that make an interesting example of the direct fall out. I updated the site today, and the full run of Hell's Highway will be making it online slowly. A new baby and a two-year-old means my spare time went out the window, but I'm using the odd minutes I find to scan away. | |
