++ Missing in Action - Whither Stalin? ++

What possible problems could Hellman of Hammer Force give a revised Action? Politics seem to be the answer. Although the October 23rd story was included in the revised December 4th issue, there was one significant change. In the story, we see Hellman and the last survivors of Hammer Force outwit a Russian regiment, capture one of their tanks and use it against them before making their escape through the snow covered wastes in their King Tiger. Hellman and his crew congratulate themselves on their escape and set off in search of the retreating German army. A comment is made about loving to see the faces in the Kremlin that night, and in the next panel we are duly obliged with what Hammer Force cannot see for themselves. The foreground figure is obviously Stalin, and he offers a million Roubles for Hellman, dead or alive. This would lay down the foundations for a major plotline as Hellman is stalked for the bounty, opening up a possibility for treachery from within.

In the new, caring Action, this wouldn't do. Stalin brings Hellman of Hammer Force into some kind of reality, which wasn't what they were after anymore. If the story is set apart from reality then by the new logic applied to Action, it stands less chance of offending. Erwin Rommel may have appeared earlier on, but now factual characters could not cross into the realms of fiction, so Stalin was removed and the panel redrawn. By losing the panel, the plot device was also lost. This can be seen from the 'Next Week' tag. Where will Hellman's adventures lead him? Nowhere near reality, that much is certain.
